Nagaland’s Cultural Heritage Documentary Debuts at Melbourne Film Festival

Northeast, August 18, 2024 — A documentary celebrating Nagaland’s rich cultural heritage, “Headhunting to Beatboxing,” made its world premiere at the Melbourne Film Festival, receiving acclaim for its portrayal of the region’s vibrant traditions. Produced by the acclaimed composer A.R. Rahman, the film offers a deep dive into the Naga people’s ancestral stories, diverse tribal communities, and traditional lifestyles.

Abu Metha, Adviser to the Nagaland Chief Minister, attended the premiere and underscored the documentary’s significance. Metha highlighted its role as a cultural ambassador, showcasing Nagaland’s heritage and inviting global audiences to engage with the region’s unique traditions, particularly through the Hornbill Festival.

The film features Naga youth, who Metha praised for their confident representation of their culture on an international stage. He dedicated the documentary to the young generation of Nagaland and their efforts to preserve their cultural legacy, expressing his appreciation to A.R. Rahman and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for their support.

Metha’s tweet read, “This film is dedicated to the youth of Nagaland and the richness of our vibrant culture.
