Nation Pays Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri on Their Birth Anniversaries
National Desk, 2nd October: President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar visited Rajghat on Wednesday to honor the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi on his 155th birth anniversary. The solemn ceremony at the iconic memorial in New Delhi was a reflection of the nation’s deep reverence for the Father of the Nation, whose principles of truth and non-violence shaped India’s path to independence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Manohar Lal, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also paid their respects earlier in the day. In a message shared on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi expressed profound admiration for Gandhi’s enduring ideals, stating, “On behalf of all countrymen, salutations to Pujya Bapu on his birth anniversary. His life and ideals based on truth, harmony, and equality will always remain an inspiration for the countrymen.”
In addition to commemorating Gandhi, the Prime Minister paid homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who shares the same birth anniversary. Modi recognized Shastri’s commitment to the nation, particularly his advocacy for soldiers, farmers, and national dignity. “Respectful tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary, who dedicated his life for the ‘jawan’, ‘kisan’, and ‘swabhiman’ of the country,” he wrote.
Gandhi Jayanti, observed nationwide on October 2, celebrates the life and contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. Known for leading India’s non-violent independence movement, Gandhi’s principles continue to inspire millions around the world. The day also honors Lal Bahadur Shastri, remembered for his leadership and the famous slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” emphasizing the importance of soldiers and farmers to India’s progress.
