National Medical Commission renews 5-year recognition for AMCH and GMCH

Guwahati, 22 June: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has extended the recognition of Assam Medical College and Gauhati Medical College for an additional five years with 170 and 156 seats in the MBBS programme, respectively.

CM Sarma tweeted, “The National Medical Commission has recognized Assam Medical College and Guwahati Medical College for another 5 years, with 170 and 156 seats respectively in the MBBS course.”

Based on the NMC’s virtual evaluation of the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) during the April 3 MBBS practical exams, physical inspection of the facilities and biometric attendance using Aadhaar, the college was found to have inadequate teaching staff and broken cameras.

This comes after the two medical colleges appealed to the NMC after the commission temporarily suspended recognition of the aforementioned institutions because they failed to meet the commission’s criteria during recent inspections.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College (FAAMC) in Barpeta another medical school has yet to get its recognition restored because it was also temporarily suspended.

For applicants who passed the NEET UG 2023 exam, Assam cabinet recently proposed a 10% reservation for NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates.

Additionally, it has agreed to extend the reservation for MBBS admission in Assam medical colleges for six groups of Other Backward Castes (OBCs) and More Other Backward Castes (MOBCs).
