NIA Arrests Key Suspect in Mizoram Arms Trafficking Crackdown

Northeast Desk, 27th May: In a significant operation, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended a suspect in Mizoram, Solomona alias Hminga, during extensive raids targeting arms, ammunition, and explosives trafficking networks. The coordinated searches spanned six locations in the Aizawl district, including two gun shops, resulting in the seizure of a substantial cache of explosive materials, ammunition, digital devices, documents, and other incriminating items.

Solomona’s arrest marks the second apprehension in the ongoing case (RC-31/2023/NIA/DLI), which was initiated on December 26, 2023. The case involves multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Explosive Substances Act, Arms Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P) Act), based on reliable information about a large-scale illegal arms, ammunition, and explosives supply network in the northeastern region of India.

Investigations by the NIA have uncovered that the accused had established a trafficking network along the Myanmar-Mizoram border, facilitating the smuggling of arms and explosives into Mizoram and Manipur. This network also extended support to Myanmar-based armed groups by providing them with arms and ammunition.

Previously, Laigaihawma was arrested in connection with this case. His associate, Lalmuanawma alias Mangliana, originally from Myanmar, remains at large. The network, bolstered by Myanmar-based collaborators, was heavily involved in the supply chain of illegal arms and ammunition within the region.

Further investigations have revealed that hawala channels were utilized to process payments for the trafficking activities. The NIA continues to probe deeper into the network, aiming to dismantle the entire illegal supply chain.
