NIT Meghalaya Launches Computer Training Centre to Empower Visually Impaired Individuals
Northeast Desk, 27th May: In a significant step towards enhancing the livelihood opportunities for the visually impaired community in Meghalaya, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya inaugurated a computer training centre at its temporary campus located in Bijni Complex, Laitumkhrah.
The initiative, aimed at benefiting the visually impaired population in the state, comes in response to reports indicating approximately 2300 visually impaired individuals residing in Meghalaya. With the goal of providing practical skills and empowering this segment of the population, the computer training centre will offer a comprehensive two-month course covering essential topics such as Microsoft Office, Excel, document writing, web browsing, and social media proficiency.
The inaugural batch of the course will enroll ten visually impaired individuals, who upon successful completion, will receive certificates from NIT Meghalaya, acknowledging their newfound skills and expertise. Moreover, in a bid to further support the livelihood development of differently-abled individuals, the institute announced plans to establish a dedicated skill development centre at its main Sohra campus.
The ceremony marking the launch of the computer training centre was graced by prominent dignitaries including Maya Alagh and Sunil Alagh, Chairman of the Board of Directors, NIT Meghalaya, alongside Professor Pinakeswar Mahanta, Director of NIT Meghalaya, and university staff. The development of the centre was spearheaded by a dedicated team led by Dr. Bunil Kumar Balabantaray, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Notably, the event also witnessed the presence of representatives from Blind Lead Trust, including Jitendra Dkhar (Co-Founder Managing Director), Bandwina Khymdeit (Secretary), Kanai Debnath (Trustee), and Kamdathmu Langstang (Trustee), underscoring the collaborative effort and collective commitment towards empowering the visually impaired community in Meghalaya.
