North East Gas Grid Project in Tripura on Track for March 2025 Completion
Northeast Desk, 12th July: The North East Gas Grid (NEGG) project, a crucial infrastructure initiative designed to synchronize gas supply across Northeast India, is on schedule to be completed in Tripura by March 2025, state officials confirmed today.
The project involves the construction of a 253-kilometre gas pipeline traversing seven districts in Tripura. Vishwasree B, Director of the State Industries and Commerce Department, informed PTI that the NEGG project is being executed by Indradhanush Gas Grid Ltd (IGGL), a joint venture involving GAIL, IOCL, OIL, NRL (Numaligarh Refinery Ltd), and ONGC.
To date, approximately 105 kilometres of the pipeline have been completed. The remaining sections, which are in various stages of land acquisition, pipeline welding, and laying, are expected to be finalized by the March 2025 deadline.
Vishwasree noted that compensation payments for land acquisition had encountered delays due to issues with ownership documents. However, district magistrates have since resolved these issues, and the compensation process is now underway.
Once operational, the NEGG project is anticipated to ensure a more efficient and consistent gas supply, which is vital for industrial applications and power generation plants in the region.
In parallel with the NEGG project, the Tripura state government has granted a license to ONGC for exploration in five blocks. If gas reserves are discovered, ONGC will seek state permission to commence extraction operations. Tripura is estimated to have gas reserves of around 8 billion cubic metres.
The completion of the NEGG project is expected to significantly enhance the region’s infrastructure and economic development by providing a steady and reliable supply of natural gas.
