Northeast India Welfare Association Chennai Appeals to Governor for Restoration of Chennai-Dimapur Train Service
Northeast Desk, 26th February: The North East India Welfare Association Chennai (NEIWAC) has reached out to Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, urging his intervention to reinstate the train service between Chennai and Dimapur. Pastor Wapangtoshi, President of NEIWAC and Naga Christian Fellowship Chennai (NCF Chennai), submitted a letter to Governor Ravi, emphasizing the crucial need to restore the direct train service originating from Chennai and stopping at Dimapur station.
Prior to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the direct train service from Chennai to Dimapur played a vital role as a lifeline for many individuals from the Northeast, especially Nagaland, Manipur, and parts of Assam, residing in and around Chennai. The discontinuation of this service has posed significant challenges for the Northeastern community, compelling them to seek alternative, often time-consuming travel options or incur a substantial increase in travel expenses.
Pastor Wapangtoshi, speaking on behalf of NEIWAC, underscored the importance of reinstating the Chennai-Dimapur train service. He emphasized that not only would this restoration alleviate the hardships faced by Northeastern residents in Tamil Nadu, but it would also strengthen the bond between the people of Tamil Nadu and the Northeast. By facilitating easier and more affordable travel, the reinstated train service would contribute to a more inclusive and harmonious society, bridging geographical distances, and fostering unity among diverse communities.
