NPCC Seeks Probe into Alleged Embezzlement of MGNREGA Funds
Kohima: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has expressed profound outrage and serious concern over reports of unauthorized deductions from Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) funds intended for beneficiaries across Nagaland. A recent revelation by the Kacharigaon Phevima Village Council on June 7, 2025, alleged that officials from the State’s Rural Development Department have been consistently extorting substantial portions of welfare funds through illicit “commissions” or “cuts”.
The NPCC views this practice as reflective of a deeply ingrained culture of corruption within the Rural Development Department, where extortion has become normalized and constitutes a blatant abuse of power. The party emphasizes that MGNREGA funds are vital for supporting grassroots infrastructure and providing livelihood security to rural communities, particularly the most vulnerable populations.
The exploitation of these funds deprives rural citizens of their rightful entitlements and exacerbates inequality, according to the Congress committee. The NPCC has demanded that the state government and the Minister of Rural Development launch an immediate inquiry and take stringent action against those responsible.
The party insists on full accountability and justice for Nagaland’s rural population. By demanding strict action, the NPCC aims to ensure that those guilty of embezzlement are held accountable, and the rights of rural citizens are protected.
