Only One Application for Citizenship under CAA from Barak Valley, Assures Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
Guwahati, 8th April: Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, revealed that only one individual from the Barak Valley has applied for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), dismissing the widespread notion of a significant influx.
Addressing the media, Sarma emphasized the scarcity of applications, stating, “There is nothing called CAA, no one has applied for it from the state…As of date, only one person from Barak Valley has applied for citizenship application under CAA.”
Asserting that the protests against CAA were fueled by misconceptions, Sarma challenged the protestors to provide answers, as the anticipated surge in applications has not materialized.
Highlighting the lack of applications even in areas with significant Bengali-speaking communities, like the Sonari constituency, Sarma questioned the validity of the apprehensions surrounding CAA.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is slated to hear the case against CAA filed by the Coordination Committee on April 9th, further validating the opposition’s stance against the legislation.
Leading the initiative against CAA is renowned scholar, writer, and social scientist Dr. Hiren Gohain, whose distinguished academic background adds weight to the opposition’s argument.
Notably, Dr. Gohain and other prominent figures faced sedition charges in January 2019 following their remarks during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, underscoring the contentious nature of the issue.
