Over 38,000 Homes Destroyed by Myanmar’s Regime Forces Since 2021
Guwahati: Independent research organisation Data For Myanmar (DFM) asserts that the military government in Myanmar destroyed at least 38,383 homes in 12 states between May 2021 and November 2022, which might be regarded as a crime against humanity.
The Sagaing and Magwe areas, which are considered to be armed junta strongholds, have sustained the most damage since 2021 as a result of repeated arson attacks on residential buildings.
According to the most recent DFM data, the most severely affected region from May 2021 to November 2022 was Sagaing Region, which lost 27,496 homes, while neighbouring Magwe Region sustained losses of 7,818 civilian structures due to junta arson attacks.
Notably, 32 out of 37 townships in Sagaing alone have DFM records of regime arson assaults. The most arson attacks occurred in four of the townships: Khin-U, Pale, Kantbalu, and Taze. Each of these townships lost about 2,200 homes as a result.
At least 80 people, including singers and musicians, died earlier in October 2022 as a result of airstrikes by the military of Myanmar in the Kachin state of the north.
Members of the group and a rescue worker claimed on October 24 that the singers and musicians were attending an anniversary celebration of the main political organisation for the Kachin ethnic minority.
According to the reports, the alleged incident occurred just three days before a special meeting of Southeast Asian foreign ministers was scheduled to take place in Indonesia to tackle the rising violence in Myanmar.
Since the military seized power from Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratic administration in February 2021, it appears that the number of victims at the Kachin Independence Organization’s celebration in the northern state of Kachin on Sunday night was the most in a single airstrike.
