Over 6,000 Children, Women Linked to Anganwadi Centres in Manipur Refugee Camps
Northeast Desk, 10th August: The Indian government has reported that a significant number of displaced children and women residing in refugee camps in Manipur are receiving support through Anganwadi centres, according to a written response presented in the Lok Sabha by Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi on Friday.
As per the report, 6,164 children aged between six months and six years, along with 2,638 adolescent girls, 232 pregnant women, and 753 lactating mothers, are currently residing in these camps. These individuals have been linked to 271 nearby Anganwadi centres to ensure they receive necessary care and services.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, a maternity benefit program, 103 women expecting their first child have been enrolled. Out of these, 70 women have received the first instalment of ₹3,000, while 33 have received the second instalment of ₹2,000. Additionally, 53 women expecting a second-born baby girl have been provided with ₹6,000 each.
To manage the temporary Anganwadi services within the relief camps, 359 Anganwadi workers and 268 helpers have been actively engaged, ensuring that the needs of the displaced population are met during this difficult time.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Centre has approved special assistance of ₹400.42 crore to support the displaced persons living in these camps, following a request from the Manipur government.
The situation in Manipur has been tense since ethnic violence erupted in May last year between the Imphal valley-based Meitei community and the hills-based Kuki community. The conflict has resulted in over 200 deaths and left thousands homeless, necessitating ongoing relief efforts in the region.
