Panchayat By-Polls for 131 Seats in Arunachal on July 12

Guwahati: By-polls for 130-gram panchayat seats and one zila parishad seat will be held in Arunachal Pradesh on July 12.

This was announced by the Arunachal Pradesh State Election Commission on Tuesday.

Elections to 40 gram panchayat seats and one zila parishad seat in Changlang district’s Vijoynagar administrative sub-division have been postponed due to law and order and other administrative concerns.

State Election Commissioner Hage Kojeen while speaking to media persons in Itanagar said, “11 seats have been barred from the election process due to legal cases pending before the Election Tribunal and the Itanagar bench of the Gauhati High Court.”

The by-elections will be place at 101 polling sites across the state’s 20 districts. A total of 7000 voters will be able to exercise their right to vote.

The notification for the panchayat by-poll will be released on June 14, and nominations will be accepted until June 21. The papers will be scrutinised on June 23, with the deadline for withdrawing papers set for June 27.

Meanwhile, the votes will be counted on July 16.

The panchayat by-election would include about 500 election officials, excluding security staff. On the recommendation of the district election authorities, election observers would be deployed as needed, with two special observers from outside also present.

The state electoral commission urged all stakeholders and political parties to provide their assistance to the free, fair, and peaceful conduct of the by-elections.

There are 8145 gram panchayat seats and 242 zila parishad seats in Arunachal Pradesh.
