After US visit, Modi leaves for Egypt
International Desk, 24 June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Egypt on June 24 following the conclusion of his state visit to the US.
PM Modi held talks with President Joe Biden during his state visit to the US and spoke to the Joint Session of Congress. This well be Prime Minister’s first visit to Egypt.
This would be the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1997 and he has accepted an invitation from the president of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The Indian prime minister will reportedly visit the Al-Hakim mosque which dates back to the 11th century. Modi will also pay tributes to the Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for Egypt in World War 1 by visiting the Heliopolis War Cemetery.
PM Modi visited US at Vice President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden’s invitation. During his visit to US on June 21, he presided over the historic ceremony at the UN headquarters to recognise the 9th International Day of Yoga.
Later, President Biden welcomed him at the White House in Washington, DC on the red carpet. On June 22, the two leaders attended a historic summit following which he addressed Congress and the Bidens hosted a state dinner at the White House in his honour.
During his visit, significant agreements to further cooperation in areas like defence, space and trade were signed. The “landmark” agreement to jointly develop jet engines in India for use in military aircraft as well as the US drone arrangement were praised by Prime Minister Modi and President Biden.
