Prodigal Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa Defeats Magnus Carlsen For 3rd Time This Year
Guwahati: 17-year-old Indian Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen for the third time in six months at the FTX Crypto Cup on Monday.
Praggnanandhaa defeated Carlsen in the blitz tiebreak round after the final score was tied at 2-2 in the American final of the Champions Chess Tour in Miami.
Carlsen was about to force Armageddon on Praggnanandhaa and was on the verge of winning the game when he made a mistake.
Nevertheless, despite the defeat, Carlsen was still able to win the competition due to a better score and Praggnanandhaa finished in second place.
The Indian grandmaster had a fantastic tournament, winning his first four games straight. China’s Quang Liem Le defeated him in the fifth round, ending his winning streak. Then, in the sixth round, he suffered his second defeat, losing to Jan-Krzystof Duda of Poland on a tie-break.
It should be noted that in February of this year, Praggnanandhaa defeated Magnus Carlsen, the world champion, in an online tournament. In 2016, he became the youngest international master in history at the age of 10 years.
Praggnanandhaa once again defeated Carlsen while competing in the Chessable Masters online rapid chess competition in May.
