Prophet Row: Massive Protest erupts outside Jama Masjid in Delhi

Guwahati: A massive protest was held on Friday at the Jama Masjid in Delhi in response to incendiary remarks made by suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma and expelled BJP leader Naveen Jindal.

According to Delhi Police, the situation and protestors are now under control.

“Masjid hasn’t issued a protest call. We have no idea who is demonstrating; I believe they are AIMIM members or Owaisi’s supporters. We made it clear that they are free to demonstrate, but we would not back them up ” Shahi Imam, Jama Masjid told media persons as reported by ANI.

Nupur Sharma’s anti-minority comments sparked the uproar. A number of Gulf nations have expressed their displeasure.

However, India underlined on Thursday that the contentious words about Prophet Mohammad do not reflect the views of the government, and that action has been taken against individuals who made the remarks by concerned parties.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, while addressing a media on Thursday, said, “We have made it quite clear that the tweets and statements do not reflect the views of the government. This, as well as the fact that action has been taken by concerned quarters against individuals who made the comments and tweets, has been relayed to our interlocutors,” the ANI report said.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police has lodged two FIRs for allegedly propagating hate and hurting religious sentiments, one against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and the other against 31 people including AIMIM chairman Asaduddin Owaisi and controversial priest Yati Narsinghanand, officials said on Thursday.
