Protest erupts in Paris after re-election of Macron

Guwahati: People staged protest after Emmanuel Macron was re-elected as President of France on Sunday, protesters took to the streets in Paris.

According to videos posted on social media, police deployed tear gas to disperse a crowd of primarily young people in central Paris. Meanwhile, demonstrators can be seen tossing fireworks onto a police car in a video from Lyon.

On Sunday, far-right leader Marine Le Pen was defeated by Emmanuel Macron by a large margin in the presidential election.

“Many in this country voted for me not because they support my ideals, but to keep out the far-right,” he stated in his victory address. I want to express my gratitude and acknowledge that I will continue to owe them in the future. There will be no one left behind in France.”

However, with a significant percentage of electors unwilling to vote for either Macron or Le Pen, the abstention rate was predicted to reach its highest level since 1969.
