Protests over Govt-initiated delimitation process & area’s merger with Cachar erupt in Assam’s Hailakandi
Guwahati: Hailakandi residents are protesting the government’s intention to join the Panchgram village panchayat with the Cachar district as part of the delimitation process.
Residents of Panchgram Village gathered to protest the decision in front of the office of the Algapur Circle Officer because they were upset with the government’s decision to merge the two municipalities and the fact that it was made without consulting the general public.
The protest was organised by locals in front of the circle officer’s office, holding numerous placards in their hands. With a variety of signs, the demonstrators invaded the circle officer’s office.
The residents urged that the government convene a bench and make this important choice while taking into account the convenience and disadvantage of the general population by conducting a local survey, as opposed to making such a major decision in Delhi.
“People of Panchgram, North Santipur, South Badarpur have gathered here together to protest against the government decision. Few days ago, Assam government held a cabinet in Delhi and decided that a delimitation exercise will be conducted in the state. Without any officer or representative present at our area, a report has been collected sitting at Delhi and suddenly many important areas under my district has been transferred to Cachar. The people are miffed over the decision and do not accept the mandate. The residents have thus gathered here to protest and submit a memorandum to the District Commissioner. And if the governments do not accept our demands then a mega agitation will be held in the coming days.” said a protester identified as Saidul Alom Mazumder
The protesters urged that the judgement be overturned as soon as possible. Otherwise, the protesters have vowed to start a significant uprising throughout the district.
