Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Mukesh Ambani Over Lavish Wedding Expenses, Highlights Economic Disparity
National Desk, 1st October: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a scathing attack on business tycoon Mukesh Ambani, accusing him of spending “thousands of crores” on his son’s wedding—money which Gandhi claimed rightfully belongs to the people of India.
Speaking to a large gathering, the Congress leader pointedly asked, “Do you know that Ambani ji spent thousands of crores on his son’s wedding? Whose money is that? It’s your money.” He contrasted the lavishness of the wedding with the financial struggles faced by ordinary citizens, stating that while “there’s no money left in your bank accounts when it comes to marrying your children,” the wealthiest in India enjoy such extravagance without concern.
Gandhi was referencing the high-profile wedding of Anant Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s youngest son, to Radhika Merchant in July. The event, hosted at Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre, was widely covered for its grandeur and celebrity attendance, including Bollywood stars and political dignitaries.
The Congress leader used the occasion to underscore India’s growing economic inequality, claiming that wealth is being concentrated among a small group of elites. “Money is flowing into the pockets of these 25 individuals, while it is being drained from yours,” he said. He pointed out that many farmers are forced to take out loans just to afford weddings for their children, further emphasizing the economic divide.
Gandhi didn’t stop at economic inequality, also turning his criticism toward the central government and its policies. He took particular aim at the controversial Agnipath scheme, accusing the Modi government of undermining the welfare of soldiers by denying them pension rights, canteen benefits, and proper recognition as martyrs.
With Haryana’s upcoming elections on October 5, Gandhi’s remarks appear strategically targeted at the agrarian population, a key voter base in the state. The BJP is hoping for a third consecutive term, while Congress is looking to regain power after being out of office for a decade. The election results are expected on October 8.
