Raijor Dal Leader Akhil Gogoi Urges Government Action on Alleged Assault of Journalist
Guwahati, 6th January: Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal party leader Akhil Gogoi have called for government intervention in the case of an alleged assault on a journalist by Nagaon DC Narendra Kumar Shah. Gogoi, addressing the media, appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to swiftly address the reported incident of assault.
Expressing condemnation for the assault on journalist Deepankar Medhi, Gogoi emphasized the need for prompt action. He described the incident as a troubling episode, urging all democratically minded individuals to denounce such actions. Raijor Dal declared its support for Medhi and expressed readiness to protest on his behalf if fellow journalists join the cause.
Gogoi conveyed the party’s demand to Chief Minister Sarma for stringent action against Nagaon DC Narendra Kumar Shah in connection with the alleged assault on the journalist.
Journalist Deepankar Medhi, who claimed physical assault by the Nagaon DC on January 5, has sought a judicial inquiry into the incident. Medhi, allegedly assaulted during a meeting at the DC’s office, was subsequently removed by security personnel. Following the altercation, he faced detention at a police station before being released.
In response to the allegations, DC Narendra Kumar Shah denied any assault, labeling the incident as ‘unfortunate.’ He asserted that there was no assault and mentioned the journalist’s unauthorized recording of their conversation as the trigger for his reaction.
The Assamese media community has strongly reacted to the incident, demanding a thorough investigation and appropriate actions to address the matter.
