Rail Connectivity Between Agartala-Kolkata via Bangladesh to be Launched Soon
Guwahati: Railway service between Agartala in Tripura and Kolkata through Dhaka, Bangladesh will begin soon.
Agartala to Kolkata rail connectivity via Bangladesh to be launched in September.
The transport minister for Tripura Sushanta Chowdhury provided this information.
According to the Tripura minister, the opening of the new rail connections will cut the distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Dhaka in half, from 31 to 10 hours.
Additionally, he stated that 73% of the construction on the Bangladeshi side and 85% on the Indian side had been finished.
The two nations would be joined through Agartala in Tripura on the Indian side and Akhaura on the Bangladesh side.
Notably, during the British rule Akhaura served as Agartala’s railway connection.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between India and Bangladesh in 2013 to reopen the railway connection.
Due to difficulties with land acquisition and the Covid-19 pandemic the project was intended to be finished in 2020 but was postponed.
