Road Mishaps Claim Two Lives in Assam Despite Government Efforts

Guwahati, 2nd August: Despite the state government’s ongoing efforts to minimize road accidents, the recent events indicate that there is still a long way to go. On Wednesday, two separate road mishaps resulted in the loss of two lives in Assam.

In the first tragic incident, a head-on collision between two cars in Hajo claimed the life of Babul Kalita, a specially-abled man, while leaving two others severely injured. Sadly, Babul Kalita succumbed to his injuries on the way to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

In another heart-wrenching event, a pedestrian lost his life instantly after being struck by a scooter in Bajali’s Baghmara area.

The police swiftly reached the accident sites, recovering and seizing the scooter bearing the registration number AS 15G 5461. They have launched a comprehensive investigation into both cases and sent the pedestrian’s body to Barpeta Medical College and Hospital for post mortem.

These recent incidents underscore the critical importance of road safety and the need for continued vigilance and stringent measures to curb accidents.

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed grave worry last month over the state’s increasing number of road accidents. The Chief Minister’s report revealed a concerning increase in the number of road traffic accidents to 555 in June 2023, up from 500 in June of the previous year. Furthermore, traffic fatalities increased to 255 in June 2023, up from 235 in the same month last year.

The state authorities remain committed to addressing the rising road accident numbers and implementing further measures to safeguard the lives of citizens on the roads.
