Shiva Thapa Moves Into Quarters of National Boxing Championship
Guwahati: Shiva Thapa, who has won six Asian medals overall and Rohit Tokas, who won bronze at the 2022 and Commonwealth Games reached to the quarterfinals of the sixth Elite Men’s National Boxing Championships on January 2.
Thapa, who was competing for Assam at 63.5 kg defeated Delhi’s Jaswinder Singh in the Round of 16. Thapa dominated the contest and won by unanimous decision thanks to his expertise.
On January 4, he will now square off against the victor of the contest between Sanu T of Kerala and Ashutosh Kumar of Punjab.
On the other hand, Tokas, who is competing for the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) in the 67kg division outperformed Jai Singh of Chhattisgarh. Tokas was able to silence his opponent throughout the fight by dominating with his strikes.
He eventually earned a well-deserved 5:0 victory and will now square off in the ring on January 4 against the victor of the contest between All India Police’s Nishchaya and Haryana’s Aman Duhan.
Additionally, Ashish Kumar (80 kg) of Himachal Pradesh, who won silver at the 2019 Asian Games advanced to the Round of 16 stages after defeating Sumit Poonia of Rajasthan 5:0. On January 4, he will now compete in the quarterfinals.
In contrast, Sachin (57 kg), the 2016 World Youth Champion also outattacked Neeraj of Haryana and outmuscled him to win the match 5:0. On January 3, he will now face S Sahil of Chattisgarh in the Round of 16.
Shivam Tiwari of the All India Police beat Savio Michael of Telangana 5:0 to proceed to the Round of 16 where he will face Prashant Yadav of Delhi.
It’s important to note that the championships will feature 386 boxers from 13 different weight divisions.
