Sikkim Assembly Election: PwD-Managed Polling Booth Opens in Gangtok District
Northeast Desk, 19th April: A landmark initiative in inclusive democracy unfolds as a polling booth entirely managed by differently-abled (PwD) polling officers commences operations at Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok district. Led by Presiding Officer Mr. Indra Chettri and supported by a team of 05 PwD Polling Officers, this pioneering endeavor aims to ensure equal participation and accessibility for voters with disabilities.
Situated on the ground floor of Chintan Bhawan, the polling booth serves part 9 of the 26 Arithang Constituency (26/9), providing all Assured Minimum Facilities (AMFs) meticulously. These facilities include well-maintained infrastructure, furniture, separate toilets, drinking water facilities, shades, ramps, and wheelchairs, catering specifically to voters with disabilities.
The establishment of this PwD-managed polling booth symbolizes inclusivity and accessibility, setting a precedent not only in Gangtok but across all constituencies of Sikkim. These model polling stations, equipped with AMFs, represent a concerted effort to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the electoral process.
By entrusting the management of polling booths to individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities, the Election Commission reaffirms its commitment to the principles of free and fair elections.
