Sikkim BJP President Denounces Darjeeling Merger Debate as “Baseless and Ridiculous”

Gangtok: Dr. Thapa, President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Sikkim, has strongly dismissed the idea of unifying Sikkim and Darjeeling, calling it a “baseless and ridiculous issue.”

In an official statement, Dr. Thapa emphasized that this concept is “impossible” and should not be entertained in any discussion forum. “Sikkim has its unique special status under Article 371F of the Indian Constitution, which grants it distinct provisions and protections due to its historical and cultural context,” he stated.

Dr. Thapa clarified that Article 371F is a key reason why unification with Darjeeling is infeasible. The special status under this article allows Sikkim to preserve its unique cultural and linguistic identity, differentiating it from other Indian states.

He urged the public and political entities to shift their focus toward the development of Sikkim instead of engaging in futile debates. “Sikkim holds immense potential for growth. By prioritizing economic development, infrastructure expansion, and social welfare, we can ensure a prosperous future for the state and its people,” he added.

Calling for an end to the unification debate, Dr. Thapa reiterated the BJP’s commitment to fostering progress in Sikkim and maintaining its distinct identity within the Indian Union.
