Sikkim Joins Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival as Partner State, Strengthens Regional Unity
Sikkim: The 25th edition of Nagaland’s iconic Hornbill Festival at Kisama Heritage Village commenced on December 1, with Sikkim participating as a partner state, showcasing its rich cultural and economic diversity. The milestone event, marking its silver jubilee, has drawn national and international attention to the Northeast’s shared heritage.
Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia, Chairman of the Sikkim State Co-operative Supply and Marketing Federation Ltd. (SIMFED), met Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during the festival, emphasizing Sikkim’s dedication to regional collaboration. Bhutia highlighted Sikkim’s diverse offerings and the importance of fostering ties among Northeastern states.
Sikkim’s Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang flagged off the state’s delegation on November 29, remarking, “This partnership highlights the shared cultural heritage and unity among states, especially as Sikkim marks 50 years of statehood.” The delegation, comprising 144 members—including government officials, journalists, social organizations, self-help groups, bikers, and rally participants—arrived in Nagaland on November 30 after a stopover in Guwahati.
The Hornbill Festival, celebrated as an internationally recognized cultural brand, has grown significantly over its 25-year history. Nagaland Chief Secretary Dr. J Alam lauded the festival’s ability to attract global visitors, offering a platform for showcasing regional crafts, cuisines, and traditions.
Sikkim’s presence at the event includes dedicated stalls featuring local products, promoting cultural exchange and fostering economic opportunities. By participating, Sikkim underscores its commitment to celebrating the Northeast’s unity while presenting its unique identity on an international stage.
