SIPRI Data Reveals India As the Biggest Importer of Guns Between 2018 & 2022

Guwahati: India was the biggest importer of guns between 2018 and 2022, according to new data from Sweden’s Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). This makes up 11% of all imports worldwide.

India is followed by Saudi Arabia (9.6%), Qatar (6.4%), Australia (4.7%), China (4.6%), Egypt (4.5%), South Korea (3.7%) and Pakistan (3.7%) among the top 10 arms importers.

The information is allegedly included in SIPRI’s Trends in International Weapons Transfers 2022 report, which was made public on Monday. According to the research, India received 31% of all Russian arms exports during this time.

Yet, compared to the years 2013 to 2017, Russia’s shipments of weapons fell by 37%.

Between 2018 and 2022, 23 percent of Russian arms exports were thought to have gone to China.

Kyiv consequently seemed to be the third-largest importer of guns in 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The “all-weather friendship” between Pakistan and China was also underlined by data from SIPRI. According to its figures, China accounted for 77 percent of Pakistan’s arms purchases in the 2018-2022 timeframe, demonstrating the extent to which Islamabad is dependent on Beijing for its military needs.

The top five arm importers in 2018–22, according to SIPRI were China, India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Australia and Australia and they accounted for 36% of all arm imports during this time. India had an 11 percent global market share, followed by Saudi Arabia (9.6%) and Qatar (6.4%).

The top five arms exporters, according to SIPRI are the US, Russia, France, China and Germany. The information showed that between 2018 and 2022, just these five nations were responsible for 76% of all worldwide arms transfers. At the same time, the US had the lion’s share, accounting for 40% of all arms exported by it during the relevant period with countries in the Middle East obtaining 41% of those weaponry.
