Supporters forces Manipur CM to withdraw resignation letter
Guwahati, June 30: The speculation over the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh ended with a high drama on the streets of Imphal on Friday afternoon when thousands of supporters blocked the road leading to the Raj Bhavan and forced the Chief Minister to continue his position.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh accompanied by several of his cabinet colleagues tried to approach towards the Raj Bhavan on Friday afternoon but was stopped by thousands of his supporters. The supporters later tore the resignation letter of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Overwhelmed by the peoples’ support and, N Biren Singh bowed to the waiting people and decided to return without meeting Governor Anusuya Ukiye.
IT may be mentioned here that thousands of people including women have gathered before the official residence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh after the news speculating the resignation of Chief Minister spread since this morning.
“We have been waiting here for the Chief Minister Since Morning. We heard that the Chief Minister N Biren Singh is going to resign. But we as people of Manipur don’t want this. Peace is the prerequisite but the Chief Minister’s resignation would not help solve the crisis,” said one of the supporters while talking to media.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met Manipur Governor Anusuya Ukiye and appealed her for steps to bring in peace and ensure better facilities at the relief camps where thousands of violence hit people are taking shelter.
“The first need of the hour is peace. Manipur needs peace in the first place to return. I have visited the relief camps and met people. There are shortage of medicines and foods at the relief camps and the state government needs to look into and take steps,” said Gandhi while talking to newsmen after coming out from the Raj Bhavan.
Asked about the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Manipur violence, Rahul Gandhi said that he would not comment as his intention is not to make political comments. “I came here to meet the people who are hit by violence. I am not going to make any political statements today,” said Gandhi.
