Supreme Court Constitutes Committee of Former High Court Judges to Monitor Relief and Rehabilitation in Violence-Hit Manipur
National Desk, 7th August: In response to the ongoing violence and unrest in Manipur, the Supreme Court of India has taken a significant step by ordering the formation of a three-member committee to oversee relief and rehabilitation efforts in the affected northeastern state. The committee, comprising former High Court judges, will play a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being and healing of the violence-hit region.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, announced the committee’s formation and highlighted its key responsibilities, including monitoring relief work, rehabilitation efforts, compensation distribution, and the overall healing process.
The apex court has appointed an all-women committee to lead this crucial task. Justice Gita Mittal, a former judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, will head the committee, alongside Justices Shalini Joshi, a former judge of the Bombay High Court, and Asha Menon, a retired judge of the Delhi High Court.
The violent incidents in Manipur, which began on May 3, have resulted in significant challenges for restoring normalcy and stability in the state. With the formation of this committee, the Supreme Court aims to address the pressing needs of the affected communities and ensure their recovery from the aftermath of the violence.
