Survivor-Turned-Savior: Kriti Gurung’s Journey of Compassion for Abandoned Animals
Gangtok: Kriti Gurung, a government employee living on Gangtok’s Tibet Road, has emerged as a beacon of hope for abandoned and homeless animals. Her journey into animal rescue began not as a planned endeavor, but as a deeply personal transformation shaped by life-altering events.
In 2019, Kriti’s life took a harrowing turn when she contracted COVID-19 twice. The second bout was critical, leaving her on a ventilator fighting for survival. Post-recovery, she was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), an incurable condition. This period of immense struggle reshaped Kriti’s outlook on life, teaching her to value every moment and every living being.
Her commitment to animal welfare was solidified by two pivotal incidents. The first was when she found a sick dog near a hospital. Unsure of how to help, she brought the dog to SARAH, a local NGO. Seeing the selfless care given to animals left a profound impact on her. The second incident involved a paralyzed puppy named Sweetie, whose plight deeply resonated with Kriti. Despite her own health challenges, she tirelessly worked to find Sweetie a shelter. Though the puppy tragically passed away, Sweetie’s short life became a driving force behind Kriti’s mission.
Today, Kriti works independently, dedicating her time and resources to rescuing and fostering stray animals. She provides them with love and care until they can find permanent homes. While acknowledging the impossibility of saving every animal, Kriti remains resolute in her mission. “I know I can’t save everyone, but each life I save feels like reaching heaven,” she says.
Kriti’s story has inspired many within her community. Her compassion and tireless efforts, especially for dogs and cats, have left a lasting impact. Despite her ongoing battle with illness, she continues to ensure that sick, abandoned, and homeless animals experience comfort and love.
Looking ahead, Kriti envisions a future where every needy animal is cared for. She dreams of providing jackets to keep animals warm during harsh winters, removing them during the summer. Her message is simple but profound: “Choose kindness and compassion for those who cannot speak for themselves.”
Through her selfless dedication, Kriti Gurung exemplifies how personal struggles can lead to profound acts of kindness, inspiring others to make a difference, one life at a time.
