Guwahati, 25th July: Tensions erupted in the Ahatguri area of Assam’s Morigaon district when an alleged cattle rustler was beaten to death by irate locals on Tuesday. The incident unfolded when the angered residents took the law into their own hands and thrashed three individuals whom they suspected of being involved in cattle theft.
As news of the incident spread, the police swiftly responded and rushed to the location in an attempt to control the situation. However, the mob, filled with rage, turned on the police officers, pelting them with stones as they attempted to rescue the suspects from further harm.
During the violent confrontation, one of the alleged cattle rustlers, identified as Saddam Hussain, tragically lost his life on the spot. The other two suspects, Billal Ali and Mizarul Haque, sustained severe injuries and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition for urgent medical attention.
Adding to the chaos, one police official also suffered injuries from the mob’s aggressive stone-throwing.
In response to the incident, the police stated, “Upon receiving information about the locals attacking three individuals, we swiftly intervened to prevent further harm. We appealed to the angered residents to hand over the suspects to us, ensuring a thorough investigation, but unfortunately, they disregarded our request and continued to inflict violence upon them. Eventually, we managed to rescue the three individuals, but sadly, one of them could not survive. During the rescue operation, the mob also attacked one of our officials, causing injuries.”
The situation remains tense in Ahatguri as authorities work to restore calm and conduct a comprehensive investigation into the events that led to this tragic incident.
