Travel Restrictions Between Assam & Meghalaya Lifted

Guwahati: Travel restrictions between Assam and Meghalaya have been lifted following the police’s removal of roadblocks at Jorabat on Sunday.

New recommendations enabling vehicles to travel to Meghalaya have been released by the Assam Police.

Travel restrictions were implemented following the violence that broke out in Mukroh village on November 22 (Tuesday), which resulted in at least six fatalities.

As a result of the incident, the police had imposed limitations on interstate travel and advised citizens to stay away from the neighbouring state.

There was increased security and prohibitory orders were still in effect at the contested location near the Assam-Meghalaya border.

It may be mentioned that the Save Hynñiewtrep Mission (SHM), a conglomeration of five NGOs gathered in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong and staged demonstrations against the Mukroh incident.

The agitating protestors burnt effigies of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma after in front of the premises of Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma’s residence at Polo Hills.

The protesters severely denounced the purported inability of the governments of the Centre, Meghalaya, and Assam to settle the long-running border conflict.
