Tripura: BJP leaders appear to be angered with Manik Saha’s nomination as next CM

Guwahati: Discontent appears to be growing among some BJP ministers and leaders in Tripura over Manik Saha’s nomination as the next Chief Minister.

Dramatic sights were seen at the BJP legislature party meeting yesterday, where Saha was selected as the next Chief Minister.

While protesting against Saha’s selection as CM, a Tripura BJP leader thought to be a Minister smashed a chair.

However, all did not go as planned as dramatic scenes were reported from the state BJP headquarters. Minister Ram Prasad Paul spoke out against the measure, sparking a heated debate among MLAs. Before the problem was resolved, Mr Paul also smashed a couple chairs. A video has surfaced of him yelling and slamming a chair on the ground. He may be heard constantly screaming, “Main mar jaunga (I shall die).”

Mr Paul was said to prefer deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma, a member of the former Tripura royal family, to be the state’s next chief minister.

A number of BJP MLAs are upset, stating that they were not consulted and that the central leadership took an arbitrary decision.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Parimal Debbarma has expressed his opposition to Manik Saha’s selection as CM.

According to Debbarma, the BJP MLAs who convened the legislative party meeting were not even contacted, and the decision to choose Saha as the next CM was made by the leadership among themselves.

Manik Saha sworn-in as the new Chief Minister of Tripura at the Raj Bhawan today by Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya.
