Tripura: Cannabis worth over Rs 1 lakh in Sepahijala district, 1 Arrested

Northeast Desk, 17th February: Border Security Force (BSF) and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) collaborated to seize 392 kgs of cannabis and apprehend one individual as it was being packed in a plastic sack for smuggling from Kalamchoura in Tripura’s Sepahijala district.

Tripura’s Sepahijala District shares a significant portion of its border with neighbouring Bangladesh.

According to BSF sources, on February 17, the BSF 150 Battalion and DRI Agartala conducted a joint operation based on specific information and seized 392 kg of ganja along with one Indian national in the area of North Kalamchoura.

“The matured ganja was being packed in the jungle area of village – Murkhinda sangsardong by laborers and owner Alamin Mia (25) with the intention to smuggle it to Bangladesh and further sell it in other parts of India. The joint party reached the spot around 0200 hrs and searched the target jungle area thoroughly, where some miscreants were busy preparing the ganja for packing in plastic sacks. Upon seeing the joint ops party, the miscreants/laborers attempted to flee, but the joint ops party succeeded in apprehending 01 miscreant along with 02 small drums and 38 assorted size sacks of ganja totaling 392 kg,” the source stated.

During spot questioning, the apprehended individual revealed that he had two brothers, namely Ramiz Ali (55) and Achmat Ali (45).

“All three brothers, along with one person named Mizanul Rehman (43), were engaged in ganja cultivation for the last three years. They cultivated dry ganja together in forest land and sold it to various local unknown smugglers to earn easy money. The apprehended person, along with the seized items, has been taken into custody by DRI Agartala for further legal action,” said the source.
