Tripura Floods: Seven Dead, Over 5,000 Displaced as Torrential Rains Batter State

Northeast Desk, August 21, 2024 Torrential rains have wreaked havoc in Tripura since August 19, triggering severe floods and landslides that have claimed seven lives and forced over 5,000 residents to seek shelter in relief camps. In light of the escalating crisis, Chief Minister Manik Saha has ordered the closure of all educational institutions across the state.

The unrelenting downpour has caused major rivers, including Gomati, Muhuri, Haora, and Khowai, to overflow, exacerbating the flood situation and inundating large areas.

Chief Minister Saha announced the government’s decision on social media, stating, “Due to the current situation and heavy rainfall, the government has declared a two-day closure for all schools on August 21st and 22nd. Additionally, all colleges will remain closed on August 21st. All students, teachers, and staff are requested to stay safe and follow the instructions.”

The state government is actively mobilizing resources to manage the crisis and provide relief to the affected communities. Emergency services remain on high alert as weather forecasts indicate the likelihood of continued rainfall in the coming days.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant and adhere to official guidelines to ensure their safety during this period of extreme weather.
