Tripura Govt Inaugurates Trial Run of Cargo Transport via Bangladesh

Guwahati: The test run for shipping products from Bangladesh’s Chittagong and Mongla ports to Tripura via the Srimantapur Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sonamura was successfully inaugurated on Wednesday.

The cargo was greeted by Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik and Tripura Industries and Commerce minister Santana Chakma at Srimantapur.

Bilateral trade is very important to the state, since Bangladesh borders Tripura on three sides and has an 856-kilometer international border with it.

Speaking at the occasion, Bhoumik stressed the need for the development of Indo-Bangla ties and ports between the two nations. Bangladesh’s Chittagong and Mongla ports are already being developed with money allotted by the Indian government.

She added that Sonamura and the surrounding districts will see an increase in employment prospects if the volume of commodities being transported through Srimantapur Integrated Land Port rises.

Presently, 25 of the commodities on the list are exported by Tripura to Bangladesh via various ports, each of which has its own regulations.

An agreement has already been signed between the two countries in order to deliver commodities to India’s North Eastern states utilising Bangladesh’s Chittagong and Mongla ports. The first trial run was finished on July 23, 2020 in accordance with the agreement to address any problems with the movement of products over this road. The second trial run set off from Kolkata on August 5, 2022.
