Tripura Rath Yatra Tragedy: 7 killed, 16 injured

National Desk, 29 June: As many as seven people were killed and 16 people were injured in a tragic accident that took place during a rath yatra in Tripura’s Unakoti district. Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has expressed grief over the incident. The chief minister also announced a financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the kin of those killed in the accident.

The government will bear all the expenses of the treatment of the injured. More than 60 per cent burn victims will be given Rs 2.50 lakh and those with burns ranging from 40 to 60 per cent will be given Rs 74,000 as compensation.

It may be recalled that seven people were electrocuted and more than 16 others were seriously injured during the rath yatra on Wednesday. The Tripura chief minister visited the area after the accident and personally assessed the situation.

According to the chief minister’s office, the injured have been admitted to Patikray, Kumarghat and GB Pant hospitals. The chief minister reached Fatikroy and Kumarghat hospitals to meet the victim and the family members of the deceased. He directed the health department and the state chief secretary to take action in this regard.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the incident and announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 each to those injured in the accident.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed grief over the incident. In a tweet, he conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of those killed in the accident. On the other hand, he wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
