Tripura: Tipra Motha Leader Condemns Vandalism of Historic Library in Bangladesh

Northeast Desk, 8th August: Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma, leader of the Tipra Motha party, has condemned the vandalism of the 135-year-old Maharaja Bir Chandra Library in Comilla district, Bangladesh. In a tweet, Deb Barma expressed dismay over the destruction of the library, stating, “The vandalism of the 135-year Maharaja Bir Chandra library and the burning of books and historical documents reflect the level of animosity they hold towards us.”

Despite his outrage, Deb Barma called for restraint, warning that any retaliatory actions could exacerbate the suffering of minorities in Bangladesh.

The historic library, which housed over 5,000 valuable books and documents, was attacked by vandals on Monday following a victory procession in the city. The attackers set fire to the caretaker’s room, damaging some books before moving to the second floor where they looted and vandalized additional texts, some of which were over 200 years old.

Caretaker Ranjit, who was absent during the incident, was devastated to find the library in ruins upon his return. The scene on Wednesday revealed ongoing smoke from the caretaker’s room and scattered, damaged books across the library.
