Tripura to Relocate Land Customs Station Due to Border Disputes
Northeast Desk, 2nd August: The Tripura government has decided to relocate its Land Customs Station (LCS) from Manughat to Murticherra in Unakoti district following objections from the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) regarding the expansion of the existing facility.
The original plan included acquiring around 100 acres of land at Manughat for developing a warehouse, parking area, and other facilities. The project was inaugurated by former state industries minister Tapan Chakraborty. However, construction work faced delays due to BGB protests, which cited the Indira-Mujib Pact restrictions against construction within 150 yards of the international border.
An administrative team led by Deputy Director of the Industries and Commerce Department, Swapan Mitra, recently visited Murticherra, located approximately 10 km from Manughat, to evaluate it as a potential new site for the LCS. Mitra reported that approximately 12 acres of land at Murticherra are available for the relocation.
“We have been exploring alternatives due to the ongoing issues with the existing site,” Mitra said. “If we receive approval from the Bangladesh government through the Centre, we will proceed with relocating the LCS to Murticherra.”
The proposal for relocating the LCS will be forwarded to the Bangladesh government for final approval. If consent is granted, the relocation process will begin, aiming to overcome the current logistical and diplomatic hurdles.
