TSR commandant Arrested in scribe’s murder case granted Bail

Guwahati: The Commandant of the Tripura State Rifle (TSR), Tapan Debbarma, was granted bail on Wednesday by the Tripura High Court. Debbarma is accused of killing 2017 journalist Sudip Datta Bhaumik.

Commenting on the subject, leading attorney Pijush Kanti Biswas stated that Tripura State Rifle (TSR) Commandant Tapan Debbarma, who was assigned to the 10th Battalion of TSR, and others were arrested in 2017 for the murder of Journalist Sudip Datta Bhaumik. He has been imprisoned ever since.

“We moved to Additional District Judge Court applying for bail as the trial was delaying. Later, when CBI took charge they moved the Tripura High Court seeking cancellation of bail. However, the court has cancelled the bail. Later, Tapan Debbarma filed an SLP with Supreme Court challenging the order of the High Court”, said Biswas.

However, he claimed that the High Court has been given specific guidelines by the Supreme Court that must be followed before a bail petition may be heard or rejected.

“Following the order of the apex court, the High Court heard the case today and after that court was satisfied and granted bail. The case was pending for a long time.  The court has also directed Debbarma to meet the Investigation officer of the case every week. Around 144 witnesses were there among them 5 witnesses were examined. And it will take a long time”, said the advocate.
