Twin Arrests in Manipur: UNLF (Pambei Group) Activists Held for Extortion
Imphal: Manipur law enforcement agencies have made significant strides in their crackdown on militant activities in the state. In a joint operation on November 23, police arrested two active members of the proscribed United National Liberation Front (Pambei Group) from Imphal East district.
The apprehended individuals, identified as Thoudam Ibungobi Meitei and Chanam Rashini Chanu, were nabbed in Khurai Ahongei Labuk Leirak area. During the arrest, authorities seized crucial evidence, including arms, ammunition, a wireless radio set, and a mobile phone.
Despite signing a peace accord with the central government in 2023, the UNLF (Pambei Group) has continued to engage in illegal activities, primarily extortion. This recent arrest underscores the persistent threat posed by militant groups, even after signing peace agreements.
In a separate development, security forces conducted a search operation in Lunkhongjang, Kangpokpi district, where they recovered a cache of arms and ammunition.
Earlier this week, on November 24, Manipur Police made substantial progress in another case related to property damage. Six individuals and one juvenile were arrested for their alleged involvement in attacks on properties belonging to elected officials on November 16. The arrests were made in Kakching and Imphal West districts.
With these latest arrests, the total number of individuals apprehended in connection with the November 16 incidents has risen to 41. The state continues to grapple with unrest, and law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in their efforts to maintain peace and security.
