The Ukrainian nationals have been identified as 39-year-old Trishchynskyi Volodymyr and 21-year-old Nazari Vozniuk.
The duo was on their way to New Delhi aboard a train from Agartala, Tripura, without any valid documentation, such as a passport or visa.
The two were detained from the Tripura Sundari Express (train number – 14619) at Badarpur railway station, some 30 kilometres from Silchar, at around 7:30 pm on Thursday, according to a senior official at the Badarpur government railway police station.
As per the sources of MyNewsNE, officers from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP), who were patrolling the station, were suspicious of the two Ukrainians’ body language and detained them. Ukraine nationals in the train’s B-4 coach lacked acceptable identification documents such as a passport or visa.
During interrogation, the detainees admitted that they had arrived in India as tourists in February and had visited places such as New Delhi and Kolkata before arriving in Tripura.
Reportedly, their passports and visas were stolen during their stay in Tripura who added that the Ukraine embassy has been notified to see if the duo’s claims are true.
It needs to be mentioned that legal action would be taken against them, if it is found that the duo lied to the Railway Police.
If it is discovered that the couple lied to the Railway Police, legal action would be taken against them, according to the sources.
Karimganj Superintendent of Police Padmanabh Baruah said that two Ukrainians were being investigated on Friday morning.
SP Baruah added that “We’ve learned that the arrested Ukrainians’ passports and visas were taken. We are trying to verify this by communicating with the Ukraine embassy or in some other means.”
