United Opposition Forum Holds Dharna Calling for Action Regarding Riots in Manipur

Guwahati, 22nd July: The United Opposition Forum protested on Saturday against what they called Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hypocritical silence and complete indifference to the dreadful circumstances in Manipur.

The protesters drew attention to the tragic incidents that occurred in the region, where hundreds of lives were lost, thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes, and women were the victims of rape, murder, and other atrocious acts of brutality.

The Prime Minister has come under criticism from the opposition leaders for being concerned with international trips and rallies while the issue in Manipur worsens. The dharna called for the government to take immediate action to solve the serious situation.

The Assam Congress in their official Twitter handle wrote, “United Opposition Forum” staged a dharna today against unscrupulous silence & absolute indifference of PM @narendramodi towards #BurningManipur. Hundreds of people died, women paraded naked, raped & murdered & thousands were displaced while PM is busy in foreign tours & rallies.”

On June 22, the Manipur Police arrested another accused in connection with the horrifying incident in which two women were paraded naked and subjected to mob sexual abuse.

The fresh arrestee has been identified as Yumlembam Nungsithoi Metei (19).

The incident occurred on May 4 this year in Manipur’s Thoubal district, one day after the deadly confrontation ended in the state. A charge of kidnapping, gang rape, and murder was filed against unnamed criminals at the Nongpok Sekmai Police station.

The Center ordered all social media platforms to remove the popular video after it went viral since the situation is being looked into.
