Violence in Manipur: Army Holds Flag March and Amit Shah Takes Stock of Situation
Guwahati, 4 May: Communal tension erupted in Manipur following clashes in the Churachandpur district on May 3 while the Manipur state police and army intervened to calm things down. While tribal groups are protesting the court’s decision on the Scheduled Tribe status, the army is holding flag marches in violent areas.
According to reports, more than 4000 locals received shelter in several Army COBs and state government buildings. The flag marches are being held to maintain control over the situation. Villagers are currently being relocated to safer areas away from the violent zones.
Despite the state government’s implementation of a curfew and the deployment of substantial security forces, authorities failed to maintain law and order. Reportedly, some antisocial individuals attempted to pelt stones at security personnel. However, authorities turned to tear gas and opened fire at point blank range to disperse the crowd.
The Manipur government on May 3 implemented Section 144 CrPc in eight districts of the state. The districts where Section 144 CrPc is imposed are Bishnupur, Pherzawl, Jiribam, West Imphal, Thoubal, Tengnoupal, Kakching, and Kangpokpi.
