Violence in Manipur: Curfew Partially Lifted in Churachandpur
National Desk, 7 May: The curfew in the violent Churachandpur district of Manipur has been partially lifted for three hours on Sunday, May 7, to allow locals to go shop for basic items like food and medicine, according to a notification issued by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
According to the notification, the section 144 of the CrPC’s curfew would be lifted between the hours of 7am to 10am. Also on Saturday, the curfew was lifterd from 3 to 5 p.m.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted on Saturday night sharing a copy of the notification, “With the law and order situation improving in Churachandpur district and after talks were held between the state government and various stakeholders, I’m pleased to share that the curfew will be partially relaxed as per the details shared below”.
The notification issued by Churachandpur district magistrate Sharath Chandra Arroju said, “Subsequent relaxations shall be reviewed and notified based on the assessment of the prevailing law and order situation.” Due to violent clashes between tribal people and the primarily Meitei society initial curfew restrictions were implemented on May 3.
