Woman From Assam Wanted By Police Found Married To Gujarat Man
Guwahati: A man named Vimal Karia in Gujarat’s Porbandar filed a plea with the court to have his marriage annulled after learning that the woman he had married six months earlier was a wanted felon in Assam.
As per reports, the victim man had found the woman’s profile on a matrimonial website, and the two had only recently been married. However, Karia sought to have his marriage annulled after learning his wife’s real name and learning about her past and her criminal charges.
On the marriage website, the suspect, Rita Chauhan had posed as Rita Das. She was found to be a wanted criminal from Assam who along with her ex-husband, Anil Chauhan is charged of stealing more than 6,000 cars in Assam over the course of 24 years. Anil Chauhan was captured by Delhi Police in September of last year.
As everything is going on, Rita is being held accountable in Assam for crimes such as fraud, theft, murder, and rhino poaching. Vimal Karia, the victim found that she had disclosed her divorce on her profile on the marriage website after finding it. In response, he requested a copy of her divorce certificate before they made plans to get married, but she obliquely resisted by offering a number of justifications.
However, the couple eventually wed in Ahmedabad. Rita reportedly asked to return to Assam six months after their wedding to resolve a land-related issue. She went with his ATM card, Rs 5,000 in cash, and a phone when Vimal agreed to it. For the following few days, they kept in touch over the phone, but soon after that, Vimal’s calls started to go unanswered. Rita’s attorney called Vimal one day to let him know that she had been detained in Assam and required Rs 1 lakh to post bail, assuring him that the situation wasn’t too serious.
It was only after checking out his wife’s court documents that Vimal came to know of her real name. A fast Google search revealed everything about her past, including the criminal charges against her name in Assam.
According to reports, Rita claimed to be from a poor family in Assam, and both her brother and sister-in-law worked physical labour. They chose to be married a week after meeting each other because she revealed that her mother wasn’t doing well.
Vimal’s suspicions began to grow when he noticed Rita using high-end cosmetics although claiming to be from a low-income Assamese family. Vimal remarked that she would buy pricey stuff without even batting an eye. Although marrying into a vegetarian family, she reportedly insisted on drinking wine and eating non-vegetarian meals while travelling in AC trains or cabs. Vimal reportedly also came upon a picture of her with another man prompting further suspicion.
During additional investigation, it was revealed that she had previously been married to Anil Chauhan, a serial car burglar, and had already wed another man.
Rita was quoted by Dainik Bhaskar as saying, “I married Anil in 2007, and the car theft case was registered in 2015. Since then, I haven’t spoken to Anil who is currently in jail.”
In another instance, Guwahati Police claimed that Rita was responsible for assisting her former husband Anil in 2015 in obtaining a ticket that allowed him to enter the Assam legislature grounds in order to steal a BMW. She was subsequently detained in relation to the incident.
Moreover, it has come to light that Rita obtained the entry pass with the assistance of her buddy, the former Congress Member in Assam, Rumi Nath. Rumi Nath had been informed by Rita that her husband planned to visit the location for which the pass was required. Rumi Nath was also expelled from the party as a result of her arrest in 2015 in connection with a pan-Indian auto theft ring.
