World Environment Day: Sikkim declared Blue Duke as state butterfly
Guwahati: Blue Duke was declared the state butterfly of Sikkim on the occasion of World Environment Day.
Sikkim is home to around 700 butterflies, including the Blue Duke butterfly.
According to a recent online survey, the Blue Duke butterfly has been named the official butterfly of Sikkim.
“A momentous day for Sikkim as the Blue Duke was introduced as the state butterfly of Sikkim during the world environment day celebrations,” Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang said.
Sikkim is home to a large number of butterfly species because of its great biodiversity.
Blue Duke butterfly, also known as Bassarona durga, is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in the Himalayas.
The Blue Duke butterfly is extensively found in Sikkim, Abor Hills and Nagaland.
