ZORO Announces Peaceful Rally Against Border Fencing Decision
Northeast Desk, 6th May: The Zo Re-Unification Organisation (ZORO) has declared plans for a peaceful rally on May 16, 2024, at the Indo-Myanmar border, in protest against the Indian government’s move to fence the border and abolish the Free Movement Regime (FMR).
The decision was reached during a meeting convened at the ZORO general headquarters in Treasury Square, chaired by R. Sangkawia, President of ZORO. The gathering deliberated on the ramifications of border fencing and unanimously opposed the scrapping of the FMR, citing concerns about its impact on community unity and the welfare of Zo children.
Expressing staunch opposition to the decision, ZORO announced the forthcoming rally at the Burma border, calling upon all Mizo people and individuals from Burma to join in solidarity. The organization also appealed to border villages to actively participate in the protest.
This announcement follows a demonstration staged in February at the Vanapa Hall premises, where the NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC) in Mizoram, comprising five major NGOs, vehemently opposed the government’s decision. During the protest, hundreds of demonstrators from diverse age groups assembled, wielding placards bearing slogans such as “We don’t want border fencing,” underscoring widespread discontentment with the government’s actions.
