Judima from Assam gets GI tag

Guwahati: Judima, a homemade rice wine from the Dimasa tribe of Assam has became the first traditional drink in the entire Northeast to carry a geographical indication (GI).

The wine is made from sticky rice and some special herbs polpular vamong the Dimasa tribe of the state’s Dima Hasao district.

Principal scientist and head of Krishi Vikash Kendra (agriculture development centre) said that they are happy for the recognition Judima has received and ist has been a result of nearly three years of efforts.

Judima wine is the second product from the district of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong to get the GI certification after ginger which got awarded GI back in 2017.

The agricultural research department of the Jorhat-based Assam University of Agriculture acted as an intermediary to obtain the GI label for Judima. The division had previously received three products from Assam, including Kaji Nemu (a type of lemon), Joha Rice and Chokuwa Rice, GI recognition.

It may be mentioned that aGI tag is awarded to products that are associated with a specific geographic origin. The granting of a GI mark not only helps to trace the origin of products, but also helps to confirm the authenticity and marketability of local specialties.
