21-year-old youth commits suicide after he suspects his girlfriend cheated on him in Assam’s Barpeta

Guwahati: A 21-year-old youth allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a river in lower Assam’s Barpeta district after suspecting his girlfriend of cheating on him.

The deceased identified as Himjyoti Das who was a resident of Patbausi village in Barpeta. He was a Madhab Choudhury College sixth-semester student.

According to reports, Das has been missing since Friday evening. The event was discovered after several residents in Jania saw the body floating in the Beki River on Sunday.

A suicide note was recovered from the resident of the Himjoyti, where he wrote, “I have committed a major mistake for which I had to choose this path today. I was a fake lover. I am ashamed of what I’ve done and it is embarrassing for me to be alive. My fault was that I used a fake phone number to disgrace someone. It’s better for me to die. No one should file a police case for my death as the crime I committed itself is odious.”

A family member of the victim said that a Bajali teenager, identified as Mrinmoy Pathak, a journalist with a local TV channel, was engaged in the incident.

They also filed a FIR with the Barpeta police station against him. Following the event, police filed a complaint against the defendant.

It needs to be mentioned that the Madhab Choudhury College (M.C. College) students urged that the incident be thoroughly investigated.
