7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Indonesia
Guwahati: A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Tanimbar region of Indonesia on Tuesday.
In a tweet, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) made the announcement.
At 02:47:35 (local time), the earthquake impacted Indonesia, 342 kilometres southwest of the Tual area. According to the EMSC, about 14 million individuals in Australia, Timor Leste and Indonesia felt the trembling at a distance of 2000 kilometres.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre tweeted, “Earthquake (#gempa) confirmed by seismic data. Preliminary info: M7.7 || 342 km SW of #Tual (#Indonesia) || 8 min ago (local time 02:47:35). Follow the thread for the updates.”
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) also cautioned people to avoid damaged regions and indicated that aftershocks may happen in the coming hours or days. It also disregarded the possibility of a tsunami following the earthquake.
The ESMC tweeted, “Aftershocks may occur in the next hours/days. Unless it is necessary, stay away from damaged areas for your safety Be careful and follow national authorities’ information.”
